Welcome to our Shrewsbury guide. This is the perfect place to get to know about the local area whether you’re staying with us as a guest or are planning a visit to the town. We will be discussing everything we can from attractions to food & drink. Some elements will be specific to our holiday home, but don’t fear if you aren’t staying with us, this guide can still provide as a helpful insight for you or anyone you know.
Starting With Attractions...
The Historical buildings and variety of walks located in Shrewsbury make it an ideal location for anyone who is interested in exploring or to immerse themselves in charming scenery and see the attractions

Throughout Shrewsbury you will notice many black and white Tudor/historical buildings. Some noteworthy example include the Library, the Station Facade or The Square with its picture house where a variety of events are hosted including the main marketplace that hosts stalls selling goods from local businesses.

In the town centre, The Quarry is the main park. It is situated between the meander of the River Severn and also hosts a variety of different events. The park is well maintained with different flowers, shrubbery, and historical buildings. The Dingle is situated by the bandstand there; it is well known due to its designer/planter Percy Thrower, who was a famous Blue Peter gardener. It includes a stunning water feature surrounded by a circular path and hedging that is a little gem you wouldn’t otherwise see. The quarry has a public restroom for visitors to use as well as a leisure centre.

Other sights to see include Saint Chad’s Church- a distinctive looking church built in 1792 located overlooking the The Quarry and River Severn. It has beautiful architecture including some lovely stained glass windows. Shrewsbury Abbey is another church with equally as amazing architecture founded in 1083, with a vast history as one of the most significant and influential Abbeys in historical England.
If you are looking for National Trust locations, Attingham Park & Estate is a popular location with a huge mansion that had some Italian inspiration for its architecture. Alongside this, there are acres of parkland with a grand cedar trees and aesthetic garden layouts. This is ideal for anyone with a national trust membership, but the prices are fair otherwise. There is plenty of walks, a cafe, a shop and toilets.
When it comes to museums Shrewsbury Museum & Art gallery offers free entry and a huge variety of artefacts including roman, Stone Age and Bronze Age. It is organised and laid out well with plenty of information on the individual pieces and more broader periods they were from. The cafe is nice and serves a variety of food & drink as well as having toilets available for you to use.
Shrewsbury Prison offers a variety of unique activities to try out, some popular ones include: themed escape rooms, laser games, angel & axe throwing, archery, and ghost tours. The ‘night behind bars’ experience or prison tours are particularly fun as you can have an insightful look into what prison life might be like from the experts in their team.

Interested in the local River Severn? Sabrina Boat is a pleasant trip to experience and enjoy the sights while feeling the relaxing breeze and rock of the boat. The staff also provide knowledge about different elements of the town and river as well as the occasional joke. Younger children may enjoy the opportunity to go on the boat just as much as adults enjoy the relaxing scenery.
Larger events can be found at The Greenhouse West Midlands Show Grounds that offer a variety of different events all year round. The West Midlands and Country Shows are held annually including a variety of firework shows, antique markets, collectors fairs and Christmas events. There is truly something for everyone so we recommend you checking out what events are available when you stay.
Onto Food & Drink...
Shrewsbury’s main city centre also offers a vast quantity of highly rated (4-5 stars on google) restaurants and dining experiences. If you are unsure where to start, it is a good idea to wonder the local area and see what are the closest food & drink options that you and anyone you’re with would be most satisfied with. For any specific dietary requirements you can also find a reasonable amount of vegan and gluten free options.
Vegan options are everywhere, but some of the most popular restaurants in the city centre are Okra and ITADAKIZEN that both offer positive experience for customers alongside plenty of food options for you to choose from. Plantkind Falafel is a reasonably priced vegan takeaway service perfect for if you plan to have a night in at our holiday home where you can sit back while enjoying your food after a busy day. ASK Italian provides plenty of alternative versions of their menu with gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options alongside Dough & Oil that specialises in pizza.
Closer to Simply Shrewsbury Holiday Home, the two best takeaway options are the New Great Wall -a Chinese takeaway- or Onslow Balti Lounge -an Indian takeaway- both are situated in a 3 minute radius of the home and offer a wide range of food options. Just simply make sure to let them know if you need any dietary or specific alterations to food beforehand. The New Great Wall’s phone number is 01743 246131. Onslow Balti Lounge’s number is 01743 246995.

Ego at The Grapes is the closest restaurant to the home serving popular Mediterranean dishes including some vegan and gluten free options. only a 12 minute walk away, it is open from 11am - 11pm and does offer takeaway services if this is more suitable. This small selection might provide some insight to the variety of options available even with dietary requirements, so hat you can make the most during your visit at our Shrewsbury holiday home.
For Shopping & Supermarkets...
A majority of stores you may need cam be found at The Darwin Centre that predominantly includes big chain retailers in fashion, beauty, home, stationary, food & drink and much more. We recommend that you visit The Shrewsbury Duck Store, which is a novelty and souvenir store with a huge selection of rubber ducks alongside a variety of other products, some examples include their valentines and mother’s day gifts. Another fun shop to visit is Mollies the sweet store that allows you to make a pick and mix from their selection of goodies; ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Another shopping centre is The Parade Shops. Although it is more expensive, there isn’t the same chain stores that you would see in a conventional shopping centre, so it provides an enjoyable change to your usual shopping experience. The many independent specialist businesses create a balanced variety that may appeal to different interests like collector shops or beauty & fashion.
Close to our accommodation, we would recommend the Co-op Food for any food or other necessities you may want to buy. It is only a 10 minute walk from the holiday home rental and has a reasonable selection of basic goods as well as being open from 7am - 9pm most days. However, if you were hoping to buy from a larger supermarket, the next closest is Sainsbury’s -a 10 minute drive- that should have a more expanded inventory of items for you, as well as being open longer hours (6am -12pm most days).
